The state-of-the-art Zeiss star projector, digital projection system make for impressively realistic shows. This planetarium is one of the finest in the world. Grab a seat in the Planetarium – the aluminum-domed ceiling becomes a massive screen where lasers are projected to offer a tour of the cosmos or show the search for water, and life, beyond Earth. But if you're only interested in the daytime views, head up on a weekday before noon (when the observatory opens) for easier parking.
Head out on a clear day just before dark, you'll have gorgeous sunset views of the gleaming city below and spectacular star gazing. From the building's rooftop viewing platform, you can see the city skyline, the Hollywood Hills and even the city's most famous sign. On clear days, the views at the Griffith Observatory take in the entire LA Basin, surrounding mountains and Pacific Ocean. A live image from the observatory, update every four minutes, can be seen from the Towercam. The weather is often much different on the mountain than in the city below. Be prepared for any weather conditions including snow and local dense fog. Weather conditions in the mountains can vary greatly and change suddenly. Visitors should take these factors into consideration before touring the Observatory. Tours of the Observatory, either guided or unguided, are inappropriate for guests with limited mobility. The century-old facilities are not ADA-compliant and, except for the Astronomical Museum and the Cosmic Cafe, offer no access to those who cannot climb multiple flights of stairs. Health & Weather Notices: The high elevation of the Observatory (5715 ft) and the change in elevation during the approximately one-mile and two-hour long tour are unsuitable for individuals with respiratory and heart problems or with limited mobility.
